Hey Drake,

Followed the link from earthlede to your website. This is an awesome idea, and the instructions look easy to follow!

Love your website, too.. feeling inspired.

Mine is similar in practice. What differs in my case is that my panel charges a USB battery, so you can charge anything that will run ff of the battery being charged. If you ran the power to a battery that was capable of charging a Macbook, it would charge a Macbook. I'd add that neither of these bags will support heavy device usage as a sole power source, these are more for filling up while out and about.

Would this be powerful enough to charge an iPad? I'm planning a trip to New York shortly to lay my hands on one and want to use it for work. I'm on trains and planes quite alot so power is vitally important to me. No power = No work.

I've been checking out a backpack on the Apple site from a company called Infinit:

http://store.apple.com/uk/product/TX399ZM/A

I'm wondering if it will do the job. I've heard it works pretty well with iPhones.

Anyone heard anything about it?

You might want to look into using a DC-DC converter to transfer power from the solar cell to your USB devices. The 7805 is a clean and simple solution, but it is not the most efficient.

A DC-DC converter avoids the power loss of a linear regulator like the 7805. Also, a properly chosen DC-DC converter can actually step voltage up as well as down, so you could still get useful output from the cell even in low light conditions. Whether you actually need to do this depends on the solar cell you are using.

Regardless, cool project!
